Christian Tissier Shihan

Christian Tissier Shihan

Born in Paris in 1951 Christian Tissier began practicing aikido at the age of 11. As a nidan, at the age of 18 Tissier travelled to Japan to practice at Aikikai Hombu Dojo. For the next seven years he remained in Japan studying under all the major teachers at the Aikikai, including Kisaboro Osawa, Seigo Yamaguchi, and Mitsugi Saotome.

In 1976 Tissier returned to Paris and established the Cercle Christian Tissier. Tissier regularly returns to Japan, and was awarded 7th dan in January 1998 from Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba.
Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan

Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan

Hiroshi Ikeda is founder and chief instructor of Boulder Aikikai. He began his study of aikido in 1968 at the aikido club of Kokugakuin University in Tokyo, of which Saotome sensei was the chief instructor. Upon graduation, he trained regularly at Honbu Dojo and at Saotome sensei's Remeijuki Dojo. In 1978 he followed Saotome sensei to the U.S., and in 1980 established Boulder Aikikai. He is a frequent guest instructor at aikido seminars in the U.S. and abroad.

Ikeda owns and operates a martial arts equipment supply company, Bujin Design.
Frank Doran Shihan

Frank Doran Shihan

Frank Doran shihan, one of the most senior of American aikidoists, is founder and chief instructor of Aikido West in Redwood City, California. His varied background in the martial arts began with judo in 1955. As a U.S. Marine, he was a hand-to-hand combat instructor and police defensive tactics instructor. He began his aikido training in 1959.

Doran sensei is a frequent guest instructor at seminars in the U.S. and abroad, teaches at Stanford University and is a leader of the California Aikido Association.
Morihiko (Mark) Murishige Shihan

Morihiko Murashige Shihan

Born in Obatake village in the Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1945, Morihiko (Mark) Murashige began studying aikido under with father Aritoshi Murashige at the age of 17.

After meeting O-Sensei and Chiba sensei Murashige moved to Tokyo and began his training at Hombu Dojo. For six years he studied daily under O-Sensei and Yamaguchi Sensei under the guidance of Chiba, Kanai, and Yamada sensei among others.

In 1965 Murashige began teaching at Yamada sensei's dojo in New York. Three years later he returned to Japan, and after several more moves settled in San Diego where he joined Chiba sensei after the opening of San Diego Aikikai in 1981.

Kevin Choate Sensei

Kevin Choate Sensei

Starting in 1976 with Shigeru Suzuki Sensei, Kevin Choate Sensei has over thirty years of Aikido experience. Chief instructor at Chicago Aikikai since 1981, Choate Sensei received his 6th degree black belt from Mitsugi Saotome Shihan in 1998.

Today, Choate Sensei continues to train as a student of Saotome Shihan and Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan. Choate Sensei teaches as a senior instructor for Aikido Schools of Ueshiba and travels frequently to conduct Aikido seminars across the country and overseas.
Todd Jones Sensei

Todd Jones Sensei 

Todd Jones is the founder and chief instructor of the American Butokukan, an international, not-for-profit, organization with clubs at universities across the United States and abroad. He began his martial arts study at age thirteen in taekwondo, and later in kendo, iaido, and aikido. He was a state and national karate champion from 1978 to 1983.
Haruo Matsuoka Sensei

Haruo Matsuoka Sensei

Haruo Matsuoka Sensei studied under Steven Segal sensei for more twenty years before returning to Japan to study under Seiseki Abe sensei.

Head instructor of Tenshin Dojo in Los Angeles from 1989 to 1997, Matsuoka now teaches at Aikido Doshinokai Dojo in Culver City, Ikazuchi Dojo in Irvine, and the University of California.
Frank McGouirk Sensei

Frank McGouirk Sensei

Frank McGouirk began aikido under Koichi Tohei sensei and founded founded Aikido-Ai in 1981. A certified Qigong and Tai Chi teacher, he co-founded the Whittier Dharma Kai Zen Center with Zen Master Ji Bong in 1983 and currently is the center's Abbot.

He is pleased to be associated with his teacher, Frank Doran, and proud of his son, Billy McGouirk, 5th Dan, who is also Doran's student.
Dang Thong Phong Sensei

Dang Thong Phong Sensei 

Westminster Aikikai : Westminster, CA
Dang Thong Phong Sensei was born in 1935 and began martial arts in 1950. Phong holds a 6th dan in Aikido, 5th dan in Judo, 6th dan in Tae Kwon Do, and 8th dan in Han Bai Duong Vietnamese Shaolin Kung-fu.

Under O-Sensei, Phong became the founder and President of the Tenshinkai organization in Vietnam. After 18 attempts to escape Vietname, Phong came to the United States in 1986. Phong now teaches at Westminster Aikikai and seminars around the world.
Stan Pranin Sensei

Stan Pranin Sensei 

First practiced Yoshinkan Aikido in August 1962 in Lomita, California. Later began Aikikai Hombu-style under Isao Takahashi. Promoted to 1st dan in August 1965, reaching 5th in 1983. Taught aikido in various locations in Northern and Southern California from 1965-1977. Founder and editor of Aiki News, established in 1974. Relocated to Japan in August 1977 where he resided for 20 years. Editor of "Aikido Masters" and "Conversations with Daito-ryu Masters," and author of "Encyclopedia of Aikido." Author of numerous essays on aikido, Daito-ryu aikijujutsu and related subjects. Currently operates the Aikido Journal website.
Lia Suzuki Sensei

Lia Suzuki Sensei

Lia Suzuki Sensei began aikido in 1982, and in 1987 moved to Japan to study under Takeda Yoshinobu Shihan. In 1996 Suzuki returned to the US and opened a dojo first in Pennsylvania, and later in Santa Barbara.

In addition to standard aikido classes, Suzuki's dojo also uses Aikido as therapy for inmates and people with emotional health and substance abuse problems.
Francis Takahashi Sensei

Francis Takahashi Shihan 

Aikikai Associates : Los Angeles, CA
Francis Takahashi Shihan began aikido in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1953 at the age of 10. Takahashi has studied under three generations of Ueshiba as well as many of the top Aikikai instructors.

Takahashi instructed in Chicago and Southern California and currently works in real estate while teaching at his dojo in Temple City, California.
Bernice Tom Sensei

Bernice Tom Sensei

Bernice Tom began aikido in Oakland, California in 1974 with Alan Grow and then Bruce Klickstein. After being exposed to Morihiro Saito Sensei at a seminar, Tom moved to Iwama in 1980 and spent the next three and a half years studying with Saito Sensei.

In 1985 Tom made a brief trip to China to study acupunture before moving to San Diego to continue her studies. In 1987 Tom took over as dojo-cho of Sunset Cliffs Aikido.

Wilko Vriesman Sensei

Wilko Vriesman Sensei 

Dutch Aikikai Foundation : Amsterdam, Netherlands
Wilko Vriesman Sensei is founder and chief instructor of the Dutch Aikikai Foundation. He started Aikido in 1982 under Kanetsuka Sensei and Fujita Sensei, trained as a shodan for two years at Hombu Dojo in Japan before returning to Europe and spending many years with Tissier Sensei.

Currently technical director of Holland, Slovenia, and Dubai.
